Ancient and Modern

 

A Six-Credit Summer Travel Course

Second Summer Term 2005

  

                       

Spend three weeks at the University of Mysore in southern India visiting ancient temples, a wildlife preserve and a maharaja’s palace (among other sites), studying classical Indian culture, and exploring aspects of contemporary Indian life.  The first week of Second Summer Term will be spent on the UCA campus preparing for the travel experience, and the final week of term will be given to preparing final projects.

 Three credits (INDS 3380) will be awarded for travel, attending lectures, participating in all activities, and keeping a journal.  An additional three credits (INDS 4380) may be earned by reading the six assigned books, taking part in those additional discussions, and submitting a research paper.  The six books are: Diana Eck, Darsan; Bhagavad-Gita (trans. B. Miller); Ramayana (trans. W. Buck); Mahabharata (trans. W. Buck); Manil Suri, Death of Vishnu; and R.K. Narayan, Man-Eater of Malgudi.
