Assignment 06: Due 03/12/18

Chapter 04: Engineering Tools

Answer each of the following questions briefly, but completely. Use your textbook and any additional references you may need. Typewritten pages are preferred, but not required. You may submit handwritten pages, but they must be completely legible. Handwritten responses which cannot be read will receive no credit.

Keep your responses brief; there should not be a need for a multi-page response to any of the questions. A few sentences should be sufficient.

Please do not copy/paste paragraphs from Wikipedia; you will be discovered instantly, and you would never insult the intelligence of your boss or a paying client by handing them poorly written and possibly incorrect information. Not to mention the damage you do to your own credibility and reputation.

  1. (6 points) Estimate! How much money does Tacos4Life make on any random/typical Tuesday? Assume gross, not net (don’t try to estimate expenses), and just estimate for the single location on Oak Street. List your assumptions clearly, and the values you are assigning them. For example, if you assume one taco = $4, you may or may not be exactly right, but you know that it’s more than $1, and less than $10 for a single taco. Show your cipher! Be explicit in showing how you calculate your final estimate.
  2. (2 points) Show whether the equation below is dimensionally correct:
    x = vot + ½(at)

    Assume x is a distance in meters, vo is a speed in m/s, and a = acceleration (m/s2).
  3. (2 points) Perform the following computation:
    (145 + 8.2) × 91.0 ÷ 12.1

    Report your answer with the proper number of significant digits.
  4. (5 points) Google “Tucker 48” and go deeper than the first hit to the wikipedia page! Give me five facts about the “Tin Goose” prototype. Name two features of the prototype which did not make it into the production model.
