Literature Studies

The current chemical literature is a collection of journals that are published either weekly or biweekly on all aspects of chemistry including the inorganic sub-discipline.  It is here that chemists learn the latest developments and cutting edge research that is continuing to form the foundation of chemistry.

You will periodically be asked to peruse this current chemical literature (2016 only) and choose an article that illustrates some topic related to current lecture discussions.   Requests for these will be announced in class.  Some periodicals resources are linked below.

Because of their ease of access (made possible by your tuition dollars and the library fee), American Chemical Society (ACS) electronic access journals are good sources to use.  Some useful links are

          ACS journals (through Torreyson Library)

Chem. & Engineering News (an ACS publication)

Angewandte Chemie, International Edition, English (a premier European chemical journal, available in print in library)

Dalton Transactions (a top inorganic journal published in England by the Royal Society of Chemistry)

Completed studies must                                         example

·  have your name in the file (if sent electronically)

·  be published in the current year

·  have the title of the article, including authors

·  have a complete citation:  Journal name, published year, volume, page(s).  You may also include the DOI number for quick referral.

ASAP (or similar) articles may be used but these must have their date of posting in lieu of a volume, page, etc.

·  have at least three sentences in your own words (do not cut and paste from the article) explaining how this article illustrates some of the current chemistry being discussed in lecture.  You must explicitly state the connection to lecture material; do not leave it to be inferred.

Deadlines for the these are strictly enforced.  Official receipt times will be when I receive them (either as hard copy in class or as emails).  Studies more than one day late will not be accepted.
