LOCATION AND TIMINGS OF THE CLASSES:

Lab meeting will be on Tuesday 2:40 - 5:20 pm. This course also involves three weekend Saturday field trips .

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This laboratory course will consist mostly of the materials covered in Economic Botany lecture. Every economic plant/product owes its property to some compounds present in it. Therefore in this course though emphasis is on how to identify economically useful plants, a brief description of phytochemicals is included. I would like the students to learn about the phytochemicals and understand the relationship between the uses and class of phytochemicals. The lab is divided into three main categories: 1) Plant morphology, anatomy and taxonomy, 2) Phytochemical analysis and 3) Field trips. At the end of the semester you should be able to identify plant products in terms of their structure, name (common & scientific), major plant family and chemical constituents. Attendance is required, excused absences only.

PREREQUISITES: Currently enrolled or previous had Economic Botany (BIOL 3390)

REQUIRED TEXTS: Lecture text book "Economic Botany" Simpson and Ogorzaly, 3rd edition.

A lab note book required.
