Teaching Japan: A Workshop for College and University Instructors

Co-Sponsored by the Asian Studies Development Program--a joint program of the East West Center and the University of Hawai'i--and the Humanities and World Cultures Institute at the University of Central Arkansas with funding from the Freeman Foundation.

This interdisciplinary workshop explores Japanese culture in relation to contemporary social realities with the aim of helping college and university instructors develop their ability to teach about this important area of the world.  It will include presentations by experts in the field of Japanese Studies as well as informal discussion of how to integrate insights from this workshop into undergraduate, especially General Education, courses.  All who explore global issues in their courses are encouraged to attend.  

Presenters:     Dr. William R. Lafleur (University of Pennsylvania) on Bioethics and Cultural Values in Japan  

Dr. Keiko McDonald (University of Pittsburgh) on Japanese Literature and Film

Dr. Bruce Baird (University of Massachusetts, Amherst) on Japanese Philosophy and Contemporary Culture

                        Dr. Linda White (Middlebury College) on Gender Issues in Contemporary Japan

Travel and Lodging: The Brewer-Hegeman Conference Center at the University of Central Arkansas is located in the city of Conway, 30 minutes north of Little Rock (see below for directions).  Rooms may be reserved at discounted rates of $79.00/night at the Conway Holiday Inn Express (501-450-9112, 1-800-HOLIDAY; breakfast included) and $65.00/night at Hampton Inn (1-501-329-8999; breakfast included).  Mention the “Teaching Japan Workshop” when reserving your room.  Reservations must be made by January 15, 2007 to receive this rate.  Participants who fly in for this event may wish to rent a car as there is no shuttle service between Little Rock Airport and Conway.
