Dr. Ben Rowley received his Associate in Arts and Sciences degree from Olympic College in Bremerton, WA.  He then proceeded to Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA, where he completed both his B.S. degree in general biology and M.S. degree in microbiology.  His research during this time was focused on an oral pathogen (Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans) and the toxins it produces.

Following his time in Washington state, Dr. Rowley moved to the East coast to complete graduate school at Temple University’s Health Sciences Campus Department of Microbiology and Immunology in north Philadelphia.  He received his Ph.D. in December of 2003 for completion of work performed in the area of heavy-metal induced autoimmunity in normal and anti-DNA transgenic mice.

After receiving his doctorate, Dr. Rowley remained in the Philadelphia area and completed a 3-year post-doctoral appointment at the Fox Chase Cancer Center.  During this time, his work focused on the development and molecular maturation of B lymphocytes in mice.

His current research is a continuation of projects involving the mercury-induced model of autoimmunity in mice.  Specifically, he hopes to relate this model to the phenotypically similar human autoimmune disease systemic sclerosis (scleroderma).  Findings in the mouse model may provide insight into possible therapeutic modalities yet to be developed for treating the similar disorder in human beings.
