Field Experience Requirements

A minimum of ten (10) hours with a background check and release form are required for successful completion.

The field report will consist of three parts: forms/evidence, journal entries, and a reflection. Adolescence is a period of tremendous variability among individuals of the same gender and chronological age, and dissimilar rates of maturation--physical, cognitive, and social/emotional--are commonplace.  Describe the students you observe based upon these three categories of development.  Note similarities, differences, or patterns you see among these students. In other words, what are they like and how does it relate to the course? Provide evidence to support your observations, from the journals and the course. Does your observation match what is being taught by the experts in the field?

In the journal, record observations and personal notes that can be used later for your reflection. You might not use all of this information in your final reflection. However, you should include evidence from each of the major categories of development. Provide a minimum of one paragraph per visit.

In the reflection, share what you have learned from this field experience about teaching?  How will you use what you have learned? The recommended length is two pages. Write this from a personal view, not as an academic summary. Include specificity, depth of thought, use of classroom evidence, personalized meaning, reference to theory, and professional language

SCORING GUIDELINES

Your report will include the following: attendance sheet, journal, student interest inventory, discussions post, reflective report.

ATTENDANCE SHEET (25%)

No grade can be completed without this page. Keep with you for each visit and remember to get a final evaluation on your last visit. Return sealed with your name on envelope. Also, no hours will count if done before the completed background check.

JOURNAL (20%)

After each visit, record specific information from the visit. Note observations regarding physical development, social/emotional maturity, and cognitive abilities. These details may be critical in formulating a final reflection of your experience. One paragraph for each field hour is expected; more is allowed.

 STUDENT INTEREST INVENTORY (10%)

Provide a copy of the student interest inventory that you used with a student. This may be blank, but used as reference when discussed in the reflection.

BB Discussions POST (10%)

Post a description of a memorable experience from the field.

REFLECTION OF EXPERIENCE (35%)

A two page reflection of the experience includes your analysis of the field experience with specific references to course material and the student interest inventory. Provide the following…

1. Your overall assessment of the value of the experience. Was it valuable for your future career as a teacher? Were there any surprises?

2. Your outlook on the social/emotional, physical, and cognitive development of the student(s) you observed. Does your experience relate to the course information?

3. Your evaluation of the student interest inventory. Did you learn valuable information? How could your instrument be improved before using in your future classroom?

4. Plan ahead. How will this experience inform your future preparations to become the best and most effective teacher that you can be?

5. Be specific without summarizing the entire experience. When making a general statement, back it up with a specific statement about your unique experience in the field.

 6. Be professional. Protect the identity of students by providing first name only (privacy).
