General Information
Cells produce cholesterol and the amount produced depends on the genetic makeup of the individual. In some cases, people are predisposed to high cholesterol or low cholesterol because of their genetic makeup. Cholesterol can also be derived from the food we eat. Certain foods, such as fatty foods, are high in cholesterol. Among the types of cholesterol, there are HDL and LDL. The difference between the two in the body pertains to the circulation of blood. HDL is considered good cholesterol because it prevents the build up of LDL in the arteries. In contrast, LDL is considered bad cholesterol because it builds up plaque, giving rise to hardened arteries. This decreases blood flow to the heart, brain, and other organs resulting in heart attack. Heart attacks affect one million people every year and cause half a million deaths a year, making it the number killer of men and women. With treatment and lifestyle changes, the effects of this disorder can be reversed. The amount of cholesterol intake can be modified as well as the cholesterol produced by the body.
Simvastatin is a prescription drug that works to lower cholesterol levels. It does this by preventing production of cholesterol in the liver. The mechanism of action is discussed in another page. Simvastatin is found in drugs such as Zocor and Vytorin.
