Assignment 01: Due 01/29/18

Chapter 01: What is Engineering?

Answer each of the following questions briefly, but completely. Use your textbook and any additional references you may need. Typewritten pages are preferred, but not required. You may submit handwritten pages, but they must be completely legible. Handwritten responses which cannot be read will receive no credit.

Keep your responses brief; there should not be a need for a multi-page response to any of the questions. A few sentences should be sufficient.

Please do not copy/paste paragraphs from Wikipedia; you will be discovered instantly, and you would never insult the intelligence of your boss or a paying client by handing them poorly written and possibly incorrect information. Not to mention the damage you do to your own credibility and reputation.

  1. (5 points) Do you know which engineering discipline you want to study? Pick one field of engineering, and summarize very briefly. What specialized area within this discipline interests you the most? Explain why.
  2. (6 points) Research and discover one moderately well-known engineer (past or present) working or educated in this discipline, and summarize briefly who he or she is/was, and what they have accomplished.
  3. (2 points) What professional societies should you be thinking about joining? Visit their website, and determine whether you can join with a student membership. What is the cost for a student membership? A professional membership?
  4. ((2 points) To become a licensed PE, you must pass an exam. What is this exam called? When do you become eligible to take it? Who actually gives you this exam?
  5. (6 points) Distinguish between knowledge, experience, and intuition. Discuss briefly why taking courses outside of math/science/engineering is important to your education. Give an example of a non-technical course you have already taken, or one you plan to take, that you think will be especially relevant and useful to you as an engineer.
  6. (6 points) Consider the UCA Core courses that you are required to complete (look them up, if you don’t know!). Briefly summarize the four core competencies. How will mastering the UCA Core goals and values make you a better engineer?

You can download a .pdf copy of these questions, or find them in the ENGR 1301 course folder.
