Chemistry 1450 Laboratory Practical
revised August 2014
This is a practical exam designed to test your
· organization and reporting of measurements and results including appropriate units and significant figures (see Sec 1.6, 1.7)*
· ability to make careful observations and detect evidence of chemical changes and relate these to a particular reaction (see Sec 1.4-1.7)
· experimental technique and ability to efficiently arrive at a predetermined experimental result
· accurate use of balances, burets, thermometers, and graduated cylinders (See Sec 1.7 and problems 1.73,74)
· knowledge of density and how to determine it experimentally (See pp. 17 – 19 and problems 1.66-69)
· knowledge of the relationship between mass and moles (2.82,3.61,3.62)
· ability to titrate a sample and complete associated calculations (See pp 171 -173 and problems 3.87,3.88)
· knowledge of reaction stoichiometry and net ionic equations (4.75,76)

The exam activities are modeled after experiments recently conducted during earlier labs. The procedures you learned in those experiments should be sufficient to complete the exam activities. Each student will be performing the same basic types of activities, but each will be assigned different solutions to work with.
You will have a 1 h 25 min to complete the work required for the exam. Depending on the number of students in the lab, half of the class will be randomly assigned to work during the first half of the lab period. The other half will work during the second half of the lab period. When you have completed all lab work, you may sit quietly and complete your calculations and report. You may only use your instructor or TA as a reference and may not discuss measurements or methods with any of your classmates. When you have completed your report, you are free to leave the exam.
You are allowed to bring
1. a scientific calculator
2. one page of notes, maximum
Use of textbooks and cell phones or other electronic communication devices is not allowed.
