Supplemental Instruction
Last fall, the UCA Academic Success Center began a very small Supplemental Instruction (SI) pilot program. The program was successful, and we would like to develop the program further during the Fall 2012 semester. In the Spring 2012 semester, we piloted General Chemistry in SI with Emily Malcolm.
In brief, SI is a nationally-recognized student support program that involves a paid undergraduate SI leader working with a faculty member to facilitate student learning and engagement. The SI Leader attends a specific class and then is responsible for organizing and facilitating SI sessions (study groups, in essence) outside of class. The SI Leader is not a tutor, but primarily a facilitator and motivator, although the SI students must have successfully completed the course to which they are assigned. FAQ’s (by faculty) about SI.
The SI Leaders are also monitored and trained by the SI Supervisor (Vickie Wyeth, 501-852-7167, Main Rm. 37) and a graduate student.
Note from Desrochers: This is a tangible way your tuition is being used to help you successfully complete your degree from UCA.
