Response Paper Guidelines

  1. Each student is required to write three brief essays in response to assigned readings.
  2. Each essay is limited to one page, typed, & double-spaced (roughly 250 words).
  3. Remember, your argument must demonstrate your familiarity with the article. That is, you must assert something interesting regarding some aspect of the assigned article and defend that thesis.
  4. It is strongly recommended that students consult the “Guide to Writing Philosophically” on the course web page.

On Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas

due September 4th.

Here are a few possible topics, any one of which  you my wish to address regarding Le Guin’s article:

a.    Is Omelas a just society?

b.    Is walking away from Omelas a morally responsible act?

c.    How does Omelas reflect our own society?

 

  1. Response Paper #2

On any one of the articles (excluding those in the Elements) assigned prior to Exam #1. The response paper is due at the beginning of the class period in which the article is assigned. A sign-up sheet will be distributed in the first few class meetings.
