The Necessity of Metaphysics

Taylor: “The Need for Metaphysics”

  1. Metaphysics is the pursuit of wisdom
  2. This activity is a necessary condition to live as a fully rational beings
    1. Necessity is evidenced by the popularity of tawdry substitutes
    2. A fully rational being cannot help but wonder
  3. Wisdom requires ignorance and preserves ignorance

 

Aristotle: Metaphysics Bk1 – Metaphysics is the science of first causes

  1. All of our desire to know cannot be attributed to brute usefulness.
    1. \We must want to know about the world for its own sake.
  2.  “Wisdom is knowledge about certain principles and causes”
    1. Wise person can sort instances into proper universal categories
    2. This requires a grasp of causes
    3. \ Wisdom requires knowledge of first principles and causes
    4. This requires a science that investigates first principles & causes
    5. \ Wisdom requires metaphysics
  3. Metaphysical freedom
    1. Wisdom is the result of wonder rather than need
    2. Wisdom is pursued for its own sake rather than use-value
    3. \Metaphysics is doubly a divine science
  4. Hierarchy: sense perception → memories → experiences → art
    1. Sense: show us things and the differences between things
    2. Memory: sensations + temporal existence
    3. Experience: memories + context
    4. Art: Experience + cause

Aristotle: Metaphysics Bk2 – The Study of Philosophy

  1. The gathering of knowledge requires/ celebrates failure
  2. Knowledge evolves: hence, there must be a first cause
  3. It is a methodology that requires practice
