Catalog Description:

A service course for non-majors that introduces the fundamental concepts and terminology of computing, history of computing, social impact of computers, software concepts, problem-solving, and the introduction to computer operations with popular system software such as Windows and the basic skills of a word processor, an electronic spreadsheet, a database management system, and Presentation Graphic Software.

 
 

Course Content:

The following topics will be studied:

·         Operating Systems and Utility Programs: System software, different types of operating systems, operating system functions, and operating system utility programs.

Ø  Windows: Basic features of a Window’s environment (navigating, exploring, manipulating) and File Management.

·         Application Software: Word processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation graphics, software suites, CAD, desktop publishing, and Multimedia.

Ø  Word Processing: Basic and advanced features of Microsoft Word, creating, editing, and formatting a document, desktop publishing, and mail merge.

Ø  Spreadsheets: Basic and advanced features of Microsoft Excel, developing, navigating, and managing spreadsheets, formulas, functions, formatting, charts, integration with a word processing document, and graphics.

Ø  Database: Basic and advanced features of Microsoft Access, creating and maintaining a database, queries, forms, reports, integration, and mail merge.

Ø  Presentation: Basic and advanced features of Microsoft PowerPoint, creating and modifying a presentation, formatting, graphics, and integration.

·         Components of the System: different categories of computers, motherboard, CPU, registers, memory, ports, expansion slots, buses, and data representation.

·         The Internet and the World Wide Web: Internet2, connectivity, access providers, IP addresses, web browsers, navigating, searching, email, URL’s, newsgroups, e-commerce, and chats.

Ø  Web Page design: HTML

·         Input: keyboard, pointing devices, voice input, digital input, video input, scanners, terminals, and biometrics.

·         Output: CRT monitors, flat-panel display, different types of printers, speakers, and fax machines.

·         Storage: Floppy disks, zip disks, hard disks, CD’s, DVD’s, tape, and mobile storage media.

 

Attendance policy: Attendance is required.

Grading Split:

  35 lessons    140 points (35 * 4)
  8 tests          240 points (8 * 30)

In Class Project 1: File Management

Instructions: Download the compressed ("zipped") FM Folder and save it to your desktop. Extract all files from the folder to your desktop. Open the FM Directions file and follow the instructor while we perform the tasks together.

 

In Class Project 2: Creating Web Pages

Instructions: Download the compressed ("zipped") Folder and save it to your desktop. Extract all files from the folder to your desktop. Open the "InClass_Project_Directions.pptx" file and follow the instructor while we perform the tasks together.

All submissions are via email to csci1300vp@gmail.com with subject “Project Assignment X”, where X is the project number.

Make sure you include your full name in the email.

Assignment Project 1: File Management

Directions: Download the compressed ("zipped") FM Skills folder and save it to your desktop. Extract all files from the folder to your desktop. Open the Windows Directions File and perform the tasks.

Due: Jan. 27th @ 9:00 AM

 

Assignment Project 2: Creating Web Pages

Directions: Open the Directions File and perform the tasks.

Due: Feb. 22nd @ 9:00 AM

 

Assignment Project 3: Word Processing

Directions: Open the Directions File and perform the tasks.

Due: Feb. 27th @ 9:00 AM

 

Assignment Project 4: Spreadsheets

There are two parts in this project, each worth 30 points. Second project has a Bonus task that you can do for 10 Bonus points

Directions: Open the Part-1 Directions File, Part-2 Directions File and perform the tasks.

Due: 10:00 pm on Wednesday, March 14th

 

Assignment Project 5: Databases

Directions: Open the Directions File, Jones Elementary.accdb File and perform the tasks.

Due: 10:00 pm on Monday, April 9th

 

Assignment Project 6: PowerPoint

Directions: Open the Directions File and perform the tasks.

Due: 10:00 pm on Friday, April 20th
