A service course
for non-majors that introduces the fundamental concepts and terminology of
computing, history of computing, social impact of computers, software
concepts, problem-solving, and the introduction to computer operations with
popular system software such as Windows and the basic skills of a word
processor, an electronic spreadsheet, a database management system, and
Presentation Graphic Software.
Course Content:
The following topics will be
studied:

Operating
Systems and Utility Programs:
System software, different types of operating systems, operating
system functions, and operating system utility programs.
Ø
Windows:
Basic features of
a Window’s environment (navigating, exploring, manipulating) and File
Management.

Application
Software: Word
processing, spreadsheets, database, presentation graphics, software suites,
CAD, desktop publishing, and Multimedia.
Ø
Word
Processing: Basic
and advanced features of Microsoft Word, creating, editing,
and formatting a document, desktop publishing, and mail merge.
Ø
Spreadsheets:
Basic and advanced features of Microsoft Excel, developing,
navigating, and managing spreadsheets, formulas, functions, formatting,
charts, integration with a word processing document, and graphics.
Ø
Database:
Basic and advanced features of Microsoft Access, creating and
maintaining a database, queries, forms, reports, integration, and mail
merge.
Ø
Presentation:
Basic and advanced features of Microsoft PowerPoint, creating
and modifying a presentation, formatting, graphics, and integration.

Components of
the System:
different categories of computers, motherboard, CPU, registers, memory,
ports, expansion slots, buses, and data representation.

The Internet
and the World Wide Web: Internet2, connectivity, access providers, IP addresses, web
browsers, navigating, searching, email, URL’s, newsgroups, e-commerce, and
chats.
