COURSE SYLLABUS

 

THE WebCT COURSE SHELL WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. LIBM 6360 Meets on Wednesday evenings from 6-9 p.m.


DESCRIPTION:

LIBM 6360 provides the student with a the principles and processes involved in the development and maintenance of resource collections and related activities: user needs, selection criteria, standards, and evaluation. The purpose is to prepare school library media specialists to evaluate collection needs and follow through with appropriate proactive activities in line with Selection Policies and a Collection Development Plan.

In this course candidates will utilize many items including, email, the Internet, Centra, WebCT, and an Office suite.

 

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this course, the candidate will be able to:

Discuss & Define concepts and terms related to collection development.

Compare & contrast selection and reconsideration policies and procedures from other school library media programs.

Design a new selection policy for a selected school district.

Application of standards & guidelines laid forth by professional organizations and regulating bodies (i.e., federal, state, local government) to determine needs and/or concerns for planning purposes.

Analyze the need for a collection development project including, but not limited to:

     -Justification & rationale of the area to address in the collection,

     -Use of a collection analysis charting instrument,

     -Ranking of the overall collection status via a Materials Evaluation form, and

     -Application of a needs assessment to gain student & faculty views.

Application of criteria for the selection of a wide variety of formats, evaluation of potential selections, and reporting of final choices of material orders.

Prepare a collection map and description of materials use.

     -LMS Interview with Collection Development report,

     -Needs Assessment,

     -Mini-collection Word List,

     -Collection analysis, and

     -Materials Order.

Collection Map and materials use description.

Critique of a Selection/Reconsideration Policy

Final Exam

Assignments are expected on or before the due date. Projects are due by 11:59 p.m. on the due date. If you experience difficulties submitting assignments, contact the instructor. Missed class dates does not equal missed assignment dates.
