COURSE SYLLABUS

 

THE WebCT COURSE SHELL WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. LIBM 6361 Meets on Monday evenings from 6-9 p.m.


DESCRIPTION:

LIBM 6361 provides the student with a the principles and processes involved in technical services - automation systems, acquisition, procession, circulation, and basic repair. The course provides an introduction to technical service functions. competency development in basic processes is emphasized. The assumption and general expectation is that major technical service responsibilities can be performed in any size information center.

In this course candidates will utilize many items including, email, the Internet, Centra, WebCT, an Office suite, and a book repair kit. The focus of the course is technical services and maintenance techniques. All course assignments will be fully integrated with that in mind.

OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this course, the candidate will be able to:

Define technical services and selected vocabulary words.
Describe the organization and functions of technical service departments.

Discuss automation systems and issues using appropriate terminology.

Describe the role of the online computer catalog.

Demonstrate the repair process within the technical services department.

Describe the acquisition process for print and non-print materials.

Demonstrate bibliographic verification procedures.

Demonstrate/describe order & receipt procedures.

Demonstrate knowledge of the processing, shelving, housing, and retrieval of library media center materials.

Describe the basic components of a personal computer and peripheral devices.

Discuss the role of networks in the development of resource sharing.

Prepare budgets, form letters, and purchase orders for use in account maintenance.

Describe the role of personnel in the maintenance of a library media center.

Describe the role of the inventory process in the maintenance of a library media center.

ASSIGNMENTS:

Automation Systems Investigation: An in-depth investigation of an automation system is required.

Technical Services Article Reflection.

Book Repair: Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of book repair techniques by video taping themselves repairing library materials.*

Bibliographic Verification: An online bibliographic verification exercise will be completed.

Order & Receipt Procedures: Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of online ordering procedures by completing an online order process.

Record Maintenance: Candidates will create a budget using a spreadsheet program.

Final Exam

Assignments are expected on or before the due date. Projects are due by 11:59 p.m. on the due date. If you experience difficulties submitting assignments, contact the instructor. Missed class dates does not equal missed assignment dates.

90-100 A

80-89  B

70-79  C

60-69  D
