THE WebCT COURSE SHELL WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE UNTIL THE DAY BEFORE THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. LIBM 6361 Meets on Tuesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. DESCRIPTION:LIBM 6371 prepares the library media specialist in the areas of programming, fundraising, and public relations. The course gives practical experience to students in designing and implementing special programs on both literary and information topics. In this course candidates will utilize many items including, email, the Internet, Centra, WebCT,and an Office suite.
OBJECTIVES:At the end of this course, the candidate will be able to:Articulate a philosophical rationale for providing information and recreational services for children and youth. Identify various types of programs for children and youth including those for groups of diversity (i.e., ethnicity, exceptionalities, and English-language learners). Identify the informational and recreational program needs of children and youth. Identify unserved children and youth. Formulate a plan for involving parents, teachers, and community groups in programs and services. Design information and recreational literature-based programs and implement. RESOURCES: Ray, V. L. ASSIGNMENTS:The Unserved Children and Youth Recreational Literature Program* -Identify a population of unserved children or youth. -Identify various types of programs for children or youth chosen above. -Develop a recreational program involving your chosen unserved population, including their parents, teachers, and/or community group. -Include a bibliography. The Culturally Diverse Children and Youth Informational Program** -Identify a population of culturally diverse children or youth. -Identify various types of programs for children or youth chosen above. -Develop an informational program involving your chosen culturally diverse population, including their parents, teachers, and/or community group. -Include a bibliography. Program Implementation -Implement either program in a school library media center or other school facility. -Video tape program implementation. Reflective Paper -A formal, reflective paper addressing the decisions and organization of both programs. This will also include a written documentation of the implemented program, including what worked, what did not, and what should be changed or addressed before utilizing once more. -This paper will conclude with a reflection of both programs as to which provided the best experience, provided the largest learning curve, etc. -APA format with bibliography of sources. One exam. *Recreational programs promote reading and literature. Programs are made up of more than just booktalking. **Informational programs should have some tie to the curriculum or the curricular mission of the school. Programs are made up of more than just booktalking. Assignments are expected on or before the due date. Projects are due by 11:59 p.m. on the due date.
