Structure and Schedule
All labs will be completed online through Pivot Interactives. While labs are nominally scheduled for Mondays and Wedesdays of each week, you have the flexibility to complete the exercises in your own time, as long as you submit each one by the due dates (Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week).
Advance Preparation
You will need to create an online Pivot account. On the first day of classes, I will provide you with a class key. This is the code you will use to join the PHYS 1420: College Physics II (30318) course, and you do not have to pay for this. When you get your key, you will go to the Pivot website and click Join a Class. You will be prompted to enter the class key, your email address, and a password. This creates your account and joins the correct class. Please be sure to use your official UCA cub account for your email address (please don't make me have to guess who iLikeBlue32@gmail.com is).
Ongoing Preparation
Each lab is designed to dovetail with the chapters and topics scheduled for the week. You should review the sections of the text that pertain to the exercise. Make a note of any questions that you might have, and get them asked (via text, email, or live office hours). You should know before you start the lab which main concepts you will be exploring and reinforcing. You can view the handouts as PDF documents before logging onto Pivot. The PDFs can be found in Blackboard, here on the course web, or in the shared Google drive.
Experiments
There are ten experiments scheduled for the semester. All ten labs count for your grade. You will complete each experiment, keeping a record of what you have accomplished. You are submitting each exercise directly online, but you should also save each completed lab as a PDF. You don't need to send me the PDFs, but you definitely want to keep the files as a record that you have completed the lab. Even if we don't think anything is going to crash, we shouldn't take any chances—and we don't have to.
Work in groups. While rugged individualism may be the American way, it's a great idea to have a lab partner with whom you can exchange ideas and ask questions. However, it goes without saying that the work you submit must always be your own.
Scores and Grades
Each lab exercise is worth 30 points. There are be up to five extra credit points built into each lab. This means that if you complete all ten labs, you have the potential to earn as many as 50 bonus points. Which is a lot. Like, seriously. A lot. It also means that if, for some reason, you are unable to submit one of the labs, you still have a cushion of points: nine labs might net you 45 extra points, which is more than one lab is worth. This is why there is no make up lab offered.
