Chapter Resources: Tillery, 13th Edition

Textbook cover for Physical Science by Bill Tillery (13th edition)

What Book Are We Using?

Our textbook is Physical Science (Tillery, 13th edition). Find the ISBN on the syllabus table.  Use whatever format works for you: paperback, loose-leaf, e-book.

Do I Need The Code?

No. We will not be using the publisher’s online resources for homework.

Then Why Do I Need The Book?

Because it’s your resource. My lectures are a supplement to the text, not a substitute for it. You always need another explanation of a concept or a few extra example problems.

How Do I Use The Book?

I am so glad you asked! It’s nobody’s idea of a good time to sit down, grab a physics book, and try to read a chapter from beginning to end. And it’s not the best use of the book, either. The textbook and the lectures complement each other. As you watch and listen to the lectures, you’re going to have questions.

Maybe the way I explain something doesn’t entirely make sense to you. Then what? That’s what your book is for. Find the chapter, find the section. Maybe you only need to read a paragraph or two on the specific thing that confused you. Maybe you need to study the figure in the book, and that gives you a different insight than the figure I used in the slides. Maybe you just need to see another example problem worked out.

When Should I Use The Book?

You can always ask me questions about the course material, and I hope you do. But sometimes you’re on your own—like when you have to take a test. Did I mention that your tests are open-book? You never have to memorize a formula or a definition because you can use your reference material! And sometimes it’s way easier to find what you’re looking for in a textbook with an index than it is to try to remember exactly which of my slides contains a specific definition. And you definitely don’t have the time (you’re trying to take a test!) to try to find that 30 seconds in that one video where I said that one thing.

What Else Can I Use?

Extra resources abound! Seriously, they are not a substitute for the book, but I have posted multiple additional tools. That’s not to say that you have to use everything, all the time. But I don’t know what your most effective learning strategies are, because I don’t know you yet. You know how you learn best, so choose the things that you know will help you. On each chapter page, you can:

  • Review the slides
  • Download a chapter outline that tracks with the slides
  • Link to the lecture videos
  • Download a sample exam (and the answers, I’m not a monster!)
