Totally true. Lenses are a pain in the neck. It is very difficult to grind a high-enough quality lens, much less make is a large one. Not to mention the problems of chromatic aberration (a lens will bend red and blue light differently, smearing the image just a bit) and lens distortion (a lens will start to sag under its own weight and get thicker at the bottom, or maybe a little wavy).
