As it approaches perihelion, a comet will leave a trail of debris in its wake. The dust tail that stretches out behind on its orbit never re-joins the comet, it just stays there on the orbit. So every comet creates a debris field, and adds a bit more to it with each pass around the sun. If the orbit happens to cross the earth's orbit, the Earth will plow through the debris–every year.
